Lyrics

On my way to work one morn
I saw you standing there
Your sunrise sad sweet song rang out
And filled the empty square.

The sun soared high, and still you sang
But no one seemed to care
The time clock called them to their jobs
And wouldn’t let them hear.

Once in a while, an elfin child
Would escape their mother’s hand
And sing with you, that plaintive tune
Like only innocents can.

As I listened to your song
I felt so torn inside
I knew that I must hurry on
But couldn’t take a stride.

Your melody helped me to see
What an echo I’d become
I work so hard at saving time
I’d lost what I had won.

On my way to work each morn
I sing my own refrain
And notice things forgotten ‘til
I heard that urchin sing.
